If you’re like a lot of budding artists, you get excited about learning directly from well-known experts in the field. With so many amazing artists established artists offering their resources online, it can also be overwhelming to choose who to follow; there’s so much out there!
We’re happy to introduce you to a new series of articles to help you wade through the ever-growing resources available online. We will present you with a curated selection of artists who are present on YouTube, Instagram, or both, and will provide a short synopsis of what you can expect from them.
This first in the series focuses on artists who provide good general instruction and inspiration for strengthening your skills in art fundamentals.
Aaron Blaise is an animation feature film director and wildlife artist. He has worked with Disney for 21 years, as an animator or supervising animator on “The Rescuers Down Under”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Aladdin”, “The Lion King”, “Pocahontas”, “Mulan” and more.
He is a great resource, with a wealth of knowledge and tons of experience in the animation industry. He provides a lot of tutorials on animal anatomy, photoshop tips, etc.
Ahmed Aldoori is a concept artist and teacher.
His videos focus on many topics, with an emphasis on digital painting and fundamentals. He also organizes regular art challenges, and does art critiques/paintovers.
Alpay Efe is a traditional artist from Germany, producing mostly portraits.
He is a good source for colour theory and choosing colours, and it’s really fun to watch him work!
James Gurney is a prolific artist and author, who may be best known for his illustrated book series, Dinotopia, and his best-selling book, Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter (2010). He is a popular lecturer at art schools, movie studios and game companies.
He is a really good resource for colour theory and offers inspiration for traditional and concept art.
James Douglas is a New York based artist and animator.
His channel focuses on fundamentals, digital art, artist interviews and livestreams. He is a great resource for analytical sketching and gesture drawing.
Stan Prokopenko is an artist and teacher.
Proko’s videos focus on the fundamentals of drawing, dynamic movement, anatomy, etc.
Sycra Yasin is a Canadian artist who provides art tutorials that inspire, instruct, and entertain, with an accent on comics.
